From Friday, January 12, 2024, Foodbar Zilvr will reopen!

With us you can enjoy a variety of world dishes and you don't really have to choose. We plan shared dining, so you can come by for a drink or for a pleasant evening with sharing and tasting together. We have a choice of mainly fish dishes and vegetarian dishes, with of course also options for the meat lover. We are also happy to serve you beautiful matching wines or tasty beers on tap.

Food bar Zilvr is part of the nicest street in Wageningen. Located in a historic building next to Cafe Loburg, Zilvr has everything to offer you an unforgettable evening. We serve dishes that are influenced by seasonal products, daily catches and a daily changing product range.

Our menu changes regularly due to our cooperation with local suppliers and offerings in the area.

As a result we do not have a fixed menu but would like to surprise you with a composed menu.

If you would like to take a look at our daily changing menu we will be happy to inform you about it by telephone or e-mail.

Guests who book through an external website for a fixed price receive a matching menu.

If you have any allergies or dietary needs, we will try, as much as possible, to consider your wishes.

For groups larger than 4 we would prefer the choice for a series.

History

The beginning

The history of our building goes back to about the year 1600.
No one knows exactly when the house was built so that along with the first residents remains a mystery ..
Before 1643, the first known inhabitants were N.N Lemminck, Cornet.
Anton Zeven mentions in his "Who lived where in Wageningen" that there were residents in this place since 1643. This does not say anything about the age of the current building, but does confirm that there was a building.

The bird's-eye view map of Wageningen by Nicolaes Geelkercken (ca. 1640) does not provide useful information for this part of Herenstraat. On these maps the building can be seen as a low building with a lengthwise roof hood and a rear house with a transverse roof. This traces the building of the house back to the mid-1600s.

The old street

At that time, Heerenstraat, then still called Achterstraat, was a much lower parallel street of Hoogstraat that ended at Loburg on the corner. The buildings on the Molenstraat continued where the Heerenstraat now continues. The Achterstraat was a lot deeper than the Hoogstraat and, to make the city-center more flat, was raised with sand that was extracted by flattening the current Jewish cemetery.

At that time, the Rhine ran much closer to Wageningen and there was a harbor in the area where the Veerweg is now located. Where houses used to consist of pure wood, as time went on it became more important to build buildings made out of stone.

Alterations

Cadastral data (1832 to ca. 1985) show that nothing has changed in the size of the building. Even on the pre-cadastral map of 1812/1818, the property appears to be just as big. In the series of building permits (from 1904), no major renovations before 1983 can be found.

The original building has a stepped gable, which is still behind the current facade. It was not demolished, but only renovated. In the French period, a stepped gable was passé and a facade was placed in front of it.
The upper works and sill were made of natural stone which was painted to make it look like it was made of expensive natural stone. The roof tiles in the front are originally black, which gives the idea that they are much more expensive slates.

Owners

The first documented resident was Samuel Marcus Jonas, a butcher and cattle farmer, who died in 1815.
At the front there was a butcher shop, at the back a pigpen.
The shop served as a bakery from 1856 to 1890. The owner was F. Borgers.
Also known was that there was a plumbing company and an architectural firm.
On February 17, 1986, the building was designated a municipal monument.
In recent decades there were several restaurants in it.
In 1992, the Gourmet et Gourmand company received a permit to convert the ground floor into a specialty restaurant. The possibilities of a kitchen and toilets were build.
In 2001 restaurant café Jan Steen was located here, then restaurant Keijzer.
In 2007 Keijzer sold the restaurant to the owners of restaurant H'eerlijk.
From February 2019 this is Foodbar Zilvr.
